Bacteriuria

This will be a secondary analysis of the SNAP trial data to test the prognostic significance of Staphylococcus aureus bacteriuria.

  • Bacteriuria refers to the presence of bacteria in urine.
  • Among patients with S. aureus bacteremia (SAB), up to 39% will have concominant positive urine culture for S. aureus
  • Current related studies have conflicting data, suggesting that bacteriuria may be a marker of endocarditis, bone and joint infections, and a predictor of complications and poor outcome of SAB.
What will the substudy involve - more information
  • All patients included in both the SNAP RCT and registry that have available mortality data will be included in this retrospective analysis.
  • The co-primary outcomes include 90-day all-cause mortality and any deep-seated infection (defined as endocarditis or bone and joint) indentified at any time of SAB.
  • Independent variables will include demographics, infection characteristics, including randomization arm, as well as urine culture status - positive or negative.
  • We will also perform a comparison between patients who had or did not have urine culture collection in order to evaluate the applicability of our results for any SAB treatment.

Where will substudy data be collected and stored?

No additional substudy-specific data will be collected.

Microbiological data, as documented in the SNAP CRF will be retrospectively analyzed.

Where will substudy isolates be collected and stored?

No additional isolates will be collected as part of this substudy.
